Posy vs LinkStack

Both are open source. They differ in licence, stack and looks.

LinkStack is a PHP app under AGPL-3.0 with an admin panel, many users per install and community themes. Posy is a Next.js app under MIT with six hand-made looks, a visual editor, a REST API and an MCP server. Pick LinkStack for PHP hosting and many users. Pick Posy for the looks and AI editing.

What LinkStack does well

LinkStack is the best-known open-source Linktree alternative. It began as LittleLink Custom, a fork of LittleLink Admin, and took the LinkStack name in 2023. It is a Laravel app: upload it to a PHP 8 web server or pull the official Docker image, then finish setup in a browser wizard.

One install can host many people. Users can register their own pages, and an admin panel manages users, themes and updates, with a one-click updater. There are free community instances, and hosted plans from the project start at $1 a month.

Where Posy is different

  • MIT, not AGPL

You can change Posy and run it for others without publishing your changes. AGPL-3.0 asks you to share the source of a modified copy you run as a service. If you never change the code, both are free to use.

  • Looks that are finished

Posy ships six designed scenes: Painted, Desk, Lofi, Washi, Cobalt and Night. LinkStack relies on themes its community makes.

  • Your AI can edit it

Point Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor at the MCP server on your own install and ask for changes. Edits land in your draft first.

  • The page is a file

Each page is one JSON document. Back it up, edit it by hand, or move it between posy.page and your server.

Which should you pick?

  • Pick LinkStack

    You already run PHP hosting

Drop it on shared hosting. No Node, no build step.

  • Pick LinkStack

Many people need pages on one install

A club, a company or a community can share one instance, with an admin panel to manage it.

  • Pick Posy

You want the page to look designed

Pick a look and it is done. No theme hunting.

  • Pick Posy

You want an API or an AI to keep it current

REST, CLI and MCP all work on the same page file.

Questions

Is Posy a good LinkStack alternative?

If you want a designed page, an API and AI editing, yes. If you want a PHP app that many people can sign up to and an admin can manage, LinkStack is built for that.

Which licence is more permissive?

MIT. You can use, change and redistribute Posy with almost no conditions. LinkStack moved to AGPL-3.0 in version 4.0.0, which requires you to publish your changes when you run a modified copy for others.

Can I run Posy with Docker like LinkStack?

Yes. Posy is one container with a volume for its SQLite database and uploads. See the self-hosting guide.

Can I move my LinkStack links to Posy?

Posy does not read LinkStack export files, so paste your links in, several at once if you like. Posy picks the tile for each.
